First Impressions 5/11/22
When I joined SDRP as an intern, what struck me the most about their workplace is the flexibility of it and how welcoming everyone is. The people whom work and whom I've met seem like they are flexible with the work they do. The ranger for example do not have set day to day schedule but more a day of kind of work. This allows them to have a more flexible schedule which I think is great. On top of that everyone is great! I felt welcomed the second I came in which gave me the best first impression! What strikes me most about my colleagues is how knowledgeable they in the field they work in. I knew that they would need to know a lot but the amount they do know in location alone is incredible, they all work hard and get the job done. What strikes me a whole lot about the job that I do is how spot on close it is to the kind of job I wanna do in the future, you do need to be able to identify what plants are native and what's invasive when you do trail work in order to not kill what's native. For my internship what I am looking most forward to is doing more work in the field and learning why land management is important in any society. So far though I don't have t much wonderings about what I am gonna be doing for my internship, but what I know is that I look forward to doing more!
Reflection on so far 5/22/22
What I am learning about myself in my work environment is that it might take me a few tries before I get the hang of something. It did take me a while to figure out how to dispose of plants properly and where to throw them when doing trail maintenance. Two of my co-workers had to point out that what I was doing was wrong and that maybe it’s not the best idea to throw away plants on top of other plants unless they are invasive. What I have enjoyed most though about working at SDRP is the feel of a family that I have with my co-workers and feeling a sense of accomplishment when finishing jobs and making the trail look pretty. Every day I go to work I have not dread it at all and I look forward to the next week after. I can’t say though I have too much I dislike about my work, I kind of knew what I was gonna get myself into and it’s all stuff that I need to know about my future. Though what areas of work that I would want to improve is my knowledge of all the tools that we use, I know how to use most of them I couldn’t tell you all their names, just a few at best.
Work as an intern 5/27/22
How I measure the success of my work at my internship is by the before and after of my effect of the land that I have touched, if what I have done has made something more efficient, and last I measure my success by the satisfactory of my superiors. What I have learned from this is that these three columns of measurement are great for any work environment because from this I've learned what I am good at and what can use improvement. How my work as an intern is meaningful to my education is that it allows me to see what a work place environment is like. It impacts my education because it gives me new skills and better ways to pick up tricks and what not. How this internship will influence my future direction in life is by me taking this job as working as a park ranger influences my college choice. If everything goes well and I like the type of work I am doing, it will deiced if I go UC Davis to study or to some other college. A characteristic that I see in one of the people that I work with is being a great people person. I wanna have his characteristic of being a better people person because I've seen how much it's helped him deescalate certain situations, I've seen him be a great teacher because he knows how to talk with people, and it's just nice being around nice people.
Conferring with friends 6/3/22
When Peyton and I talked about our internships, we had one thing in common. We both love what we do and love going into our working environment every day! Although both of our internships are different from each other, mine is working as a park ranger and his being a teacher, we both have a true passion for what we do. I know for a fact that he was saying on how he puts his heart and soul into the work he creates, and I can see that with the project he’s currently working on with his class. Then with mine, every task I have to do or patrol I must take, I really put my love into it because of the love I have for that kind of work. I think we are both very thankful for what we do and lucked out on being able to intern for our true passions!
My internship project 6/10/22
So for my project my main goal was to find out what land management is and how it impacts society. The reasons why I wanted to find out the answer to these two important questions was because land management kind of relates to the field I want to go into for my future career. So me learning about it would only help me decide with what I want to do with my future. How I was able to complete this project was by fully taking in every day that I go out to do some trail management, or when my mentor was discussing with me about each part of the work we were doing at the time. Once I got all the knowledge I could, I started scripting for the video I was going to create. After scripting I started recording and editing. I threw some cool graphics and that's how I got my final product.
