9th Grade Retreat
At the beginning of the year, all of the 9th graders at High Tech High went on a camping trip and Mount Laguna. We stayed there for three days and two nights. We took two buses to get to our destination. Once we got there we had to set up our tents, then we had free time for the rest of the day until supper. Then once it was time to eat, we had our food groups and the people who was scheduled to cook for that night cooked. Once the meals were made we had a little bit more time to hang out with our friends. Then at 10 o’clock, we headed off to bed. The next day we did activities with the rangers that walked us through the park. Then we worked in our art project groups to see what we want to make for our art piece. Then we went off to make lunch, we got rained on while making our meals, so my group sadly didn’t get a meal. But then it rained for almost more than half of the time of our free time. Then we did project work and then we had dinner. I had that night to cook and I made some killer mac and cheese. Then we had some free time and then headed off to bed. My friend and I went on a hike the next morning with some teachers and we saw an amazing lake with a small group of people. Then we packed up our stuff and then headed off back to school concluding our camping trip.
Dear Ms. Lindsey & Rangers at the Cleveland National Forest,
Hello, my name is Ian! Some of my favorite parts from the trip was walking to the rocks and standing up there. I really like the hikes that I did with my friends. When we got to look at the frogs and cows it made me happy. And I loved making food for my group. And messing around in my tent with my group. The rain was also really fun because of the games I played.
Some of the things I learned from the workshop is that it’s really expensive to re-make a campsite. And that there used to be natives where we camped. And then that there was a log cabin and that it was well over 100 years old. And then there are cows that graze the grass. And how there is almost a job for everyone in the forest service.
What I have taken away from the retreat is that there is nature all around us. And then that I should be more careful around the area around me. What I learned is that everything around me was cared for by the people who love the forset. And that life can be found everywhere. Then that when there is high heat in the deasert it sends a storm to thew mountains. I will use this information in the future by helping out the environment in ways that it needs help. And that if I ever go out camping in the same area, I can appreciate what I see even more.
Sincerely,
Ian Buchanan
